ZEILIENOPLE, Pa. -- Zelienople police charged a man with robbing a bank and fleeing from police on Monday.

Police charged Matthew Chestnut, 35, of Grove City with robbery, receiving stolen property, fleeing police and driving without a license.

Employees at the Citizens Bank on North Main Street told police a man handed a typed note to a teller demanding money. He took the cash and fled on Route 19 in a dark-colored Jeep at about 3:15 p.m., according to a criminal complaint. The dye pack exploded while the man was getting into the sports utility vehicle, police said.

A Jackson police officer spotted a vehicle matching the description on Seneca School Road and stopped it on Hartman Road, but the driver fled as the officer approached, the complaint said.

Police tracked the license plate back to Chestnut's parents' home. State police spoke with Chestnut on his cell and he arrived at his parents' home surrendered, the complaint said.

Chestnut admitted the robbery, but said he dropped the money on the street with the dye pack, the complaint said. He told police he had run out of options and couldn't find work, and the robbery was a last resort.
